Pristiq is TDC corner an FDA approved antidepressant drug for adults. It contains desvenlafaxine and may be taken with or without food at the same time each day. It is also important to swallow the Pristiq tablets whole with fluids and not to chew, crush, cut or dissolve the tablet since the effect is time released.
Before taking Pristiq, your health care provider should know if you have any drug allergies to any of the ingredients found in Pristiq. Also you should let your health care provider know if you have high blood pressure, heart problems, high cholesterol levels or a history of stroke, glaucoma, kidney or liver problems, mania or bi polar disorders and histories of seizures, have low sodium levels, or if pregnant or planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. Pristiq may cause some of the mentioned conditions to worsen so it is important to let your physician be aware of these conditions before starting on Pristiq.
It is also important for your doctor to know all the prescriptive and non prescriptive medications that you are currently taking, especially aspirin and those for migraines or mood disorders. Also inform your physician if you are currently taking medicines that contain tramadol, silbutramine, MAOIs (monoamine oxidase inhibitors) and tryptophan supplements before starting on Pristiq. Your doctor should be aware if you are taking in these medications in order to know of the possible reactions when taken in combination with Pristiq.
The common side effects of Pristiq include nausea, tiredness, headache, diarrhea, dry mouth, vomiting, sweating, anxiety, dizziness, tremors, insomnia, dilated pupils, constipation, decreased sex drive, loss of appetite, sleepiness or delayed orgasm and ejaculation. Inform your physician of any effects that bother you or are persistent.
There are serious reported side effects in taking Pristiq and if one of these are present, seek medical help immediately. The side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, increased body temperature, restlessness, increase in blood pressure, hallucinations, loss of coordination, confusion and even coma. Other side effects may include abnormal bleeding or bruising, new or worsened high blood pressure, increased cholesterol levels, glaucoma, seizures and low sodium levels in your blood.
It may take several weeks, as with any anti depressant drug, for results to be seen or felt by the patient. If a dose was missed, take it as soon as you remember but do not catch up or double dose if it is time for the next dose. Skip the dose and take the normal dosage. In case of over dose, contact your physician, poison control center or go to the emergency room immediately.
Until you know how this drug affects you, it is advisable not to drive or operate machinery. Also avoid taking alcohol while taking in Prestiq.
